    Rockaway Township is located in a moderately populated area 45 minutes west of New York City. There are several towns and townships, as they're commonly called in New Jersey, within a 15 minute commute to the arsenal which provide most of the off-post housing here. These are Wharton, Boonton Township, Roxbury Township, Dover, Denville, Parsippany, Mt. Olive Township, and Hackettstown. Other towns nearby are Hoptacong, Wayne, Butler, Montville, Randolph, Morristown, Hamburg, and Newton.

    About the Installation
    The Picatinny Arsenal is headquarters for the United States Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center. It is also home to the U. S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Directorate which is responsible for the creation of equipment, procedures and tools for U.S. Army EOD personnel. Picatinny Arsenal is located in northern New Jersey. With the Base Realignment and Closure initiative of 2005, the Department of Defense established Picatinny Arsenal as the DoD Specialty Site for Guns and Ammunition and relocated Navy technical experts to the base.
